PULLMAN - Class B prep golfers from Pomeroy, St. John-Endicott, Asotin and Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia checked out Palouse Ridge Tuesday and came away impressed with the par-72 layout that will serve as the course for next month's sub-district tournament.
"It was the first time any of our kids played it," Pirates coach Jim Greene said after watching his boys team place second in the team competiiton. "What we found was a long course with water and lot of sand. We learned a lot.
"But it was a fair course and I think they enjoyed it."
St. John-Endicott took the boys team trophy with a 471 score for its top five players. Pomeroy posted a 487 team total, followed by Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia at 578. Asotin didn't enter a complete team.
Cole McCanna of the Eagles was the medalist with an 86. He won by one shot over Asotin's Jon Eaton.
Riley Bott of the Pirates and Dakota White of SJ-E matched 88s and tied for third place. Pomeroy's Tyson and Tanner Feider scored identical 89s to share fifth place, Wyatt Hyer shot 108 for 15th place and Mitch Ruchert carded 113 for 16th place.
There were 19 players in the field.
St. John-Endicott's Michal Schuster shot 85 to pace a field of nine girls. Teresa Meyers, Pomeroy's lone entry, turned in a 99 and finished alone in second place.
The Pirates will host a three-way match Saturday at Crystal Springs in Pomeroy. Tri-Cities Prep and St. John-Endicott will be on hand for the 18-hole match that will include two trips around the nine-hole course.
