WALLA WALLA - Richland and Wa-Hi split Tuesday's girls' tennis match down the middle - with Richland sweeping the four singles matches and Wa-Hi the three doubles matches - as the Bombers picked up a 4-3 victory in Big Nine Class 4A play.
Wa-Hi's No. 2, Rachel Shueller, was the only singles player to force a third set after defeating Richland's Madeline Quick 7-6 in their second set. Quick defeated Shueller 7-3 to pick up the point.
"Our singles players played well, but could not find a way to overcome a strong Richland singles lineup," Wa-Hi coach Kevin Peck said in an e-mail. "All the singles girls hit the ball well. They were just not able to put consecutive points and games together for a set.
"We had some great performances in our doubles play today," Peck said. "Both doubles teams were confident and aggressive. The girls have been working hard to improve their doubles play both mentally and physically. Today was a sign that their hard work is paying off."
The Blue Devils (3-4, 2-2) host Moses Lake for another CBBN match Thursday at 2 p.m.
