College Place A $170,000 grant from the Donald and Virginia Sherwood Trust will help SonBridge Community Center complete construction of its new medical and dental clinics, plus upgrade its parking.
The award was announced today, noted Norman Thiel, board member of College Place organization.
The last “t” was not crossed, however, until supporters of SonBridge donated more than $225,000 in order to meet the requirements of the matching grant. More than $50,000 of that arrived in the last week of the time period allowed under the Sherwood Trust requirement.
The medical clinic, operated by SOS Health Services, will open in its new space later this year, which will be rent-free. The dental clinic will open after the dental equipment and supplies are installed.
Upgraded and expanded parking will also be available.
SonBridge is now debt free, Thiel said, and more than halfway through a $2.8 million campaign to complete construction within the current building. A conference and education center will follow the completion of current projects.
SonBridge is a nonprofit community center founded in 2004 to provide a dedicated location to meet the needs of the underserved in the Walla Walla Valley. The organization and its partners provide medical, dental, education and social connection services. It is supported by private donations, an on-site thrift store and several churches.
