BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Hunter Virant allowed one run over seven innings and Brett Jacobs’s fifth-inning two-run double provided the lead runs as the Sweets closed out their season with a 4-1 victory over Bellingham on Thursday night at Joe Martin Field.
The win was the second in a row for the Sweets as they finished the season 24-30. They split the season series with the Bells (32-22), 4-4.
In his final start of the summer, Virant was his usual dominant self. He allowed one run on seven hits and struck out four to earn his third win of the summer. Virant retired the first six hitters and then worked out of trouble in the third, sixth and seventh innings.
In the third, the Bells were able to tie the game on a one-out single but Virant worked out of a first-and-third jam. The runner on first was retired on a pickoff and Virant got a ground ball to first to end the inning. In the sixth, a two-out double put the tying runs in scoring position but Virant got a fly ball to right to end the threat. Finally, in the seventh, the Bells put runners on corners with one out but Virant induced an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Walla Walla scored its runs in three different innings. The Sweets jumped ahead in the second with three consecutive two-out singles. Jarrod Turner capped it with a single to right to score Kalani Brackenridge.
The Sweets grabbed the lead for good in the fifth. Kris Paulino and Ryan Cooper both singled and Jacobs scored both with a booming double to left, his 12th of the summer.
Paulino capped the Sweets’ scoring in the top of the ninth inning, hitting his second home run of the year to right to leadoff the inning.
After Virant departed in the eighth, Simon Anderson and Arturo Reyes combined to shut the door. Anderson tossed a scoreless eighth and Reyes picked up his second save in as many nights with a scoreless ninth.
