Save the alkali bees

A Seattle Times story says the prospective widening of U.S. Highway 12 through Touchet will tear up the homeland of the alkali bees, necessary for growing alfalfa.

The Department of Transportation plan is to put the new road north of the old road, and that’s where the bees are, the largest colony of such bees in the world.

My solution is, of course, obvious to me, don’t know about you — don’t move the road.

Widen the road where it stands. That will take down some buildings, but they can be moved, rebuilt or replaced, which the bees can’t.

Damn the inconvenience.
