Pro-am play gives way to Northwest Open Invite today

WALLA WALLA — Two days of Basel Cellars Winemakers pro-am competition yielded to the Northwest Open here this morning at the Wine Valley Golf Club.

A field of 93 professionals and another 61 amateurs teed off in the heat in pursuit of the championship in the 54-hole tournament that is one of the longest standing in the Pacific Northwest.

Play began off both the first and 10th tees at 7:30 this morning, with a second flight slated to take the course beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The top 55 professionals and all amateur players who finish among the top 55 scores will survive Tuesday’s cut and qualify for Wednesday’s third and final round of play.

In pro-am play Saturday, Jeff Coston of Blaine, Wash., topped all professional players with a 4-under-par 68 on the par-72 links layout. He finished two shots in front of Mike Kasch of Pasco, who was alone in second place with a 2-under 70.

Brady Sharp of Walla Walla matched par-72 and was in a four-way tie for sixth place.

Wine Valley pro John Thorsnes and Dave Castleberry of Everett led the pro net division with scores of 72.

In amateur play, Kevin Michelson and Russ Byerley of Walla Walla matched 4-over 76s and were tied for second in gross play, one shot off the pace.

During Sunday’s second day of pro-am competition, Michael Roters of Clarkston and Corey Prugh of Spokane shot identical 66s, six shots better than par, to lead the pro gross division. Brian Thornton of Sumner, Wash., and Kalispell’s Malby shared third place with 68s, and Walla Walla’s Sharp was again a contender, tied for fifth place at 69 with first-day winner Coston.

Castelberry again led the pros in net play with a 69, one stroke in front of Portland’s Jerry Mowlds.

Walla Walla’s Bill Herron shot a 3-under-par 69 to pace amateur gross players on Sunday. Two other local players, Howard Crosby and Kevin Michelson, were fourth and fifth, respectively, with scores of 75 and 76.

In the two-day team competition, Team Castleberry finished first at -47 and Team Mowlds and Team O’Neal tied for second at -45.
