Banker's bizarre case ends with prison sentence

EUGENE — An ex-bank manager from Springfield who faked his death five years ago has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for identity theft and bank fraud.

The allegations against Randy Mainwaring surfaced in 2007, when KeyBank filed a civil lawsuit accusing him of stealing financial information from hundreds of customers.

The bank alleged that Mainwaring planned to fake his own death and re-emerge as one of the customers.

In July 2007, Mainwaring indeed faked his own death, in part by placing a bogus obituary in The (Eugene) Register-Guard.

The newspaper says Mainwaring posed as his brother and submitted a fake death certificate stating he committed suicide in London.

The FBI tracked him down in Corvallis a month later.

Mainwaring apologized for his actions in court Monday.
