Kearney opens 5-stroke lead at NW Open photos

WALLA WALLA — Brandon Kearney, Assistant Professional at Bend Golf and Country Club in Bend, Ore., lapped the field today at Wine Valley Golf Club to lead the first round of the Northwest Open Invitational by five shots.

Kearney’s 9-under-par 63 included two eagles on the front nine, three 2’s and even a lone bogey.

Nine players are tied for second at 4-under-par 68, with 44 players taking advantage of the ideal conditions to post an under-par score.

Jay Poletiek, Brad Faller, Jordan Reeder, Jason Pitt, Joshua Scothorne, Greg Manley, Mark Strickland and Dylan Goodwin all shot 4-under to sit in second place.

Play continues today with the second round, after which the field will be cut for the final round. The low 65 professionals and ties, plus amateurs with scores in that range, advance to Wednesday’s final round.

The 7,025-yard Wine Valley course is hosting the Northwest Open Invite for the third year in a row. The tournament has a purse of $68,500.
