MILTON-FREEWATER — A shed fire north of town caused an estimated $30,000 in damage and at one point threatened the adjacent home.

Milton-Freewater Rural Fire Department firefighter and EMT Neil Gossard said the flames were 10-15 feet high when crews arrived to 53595 Appleton Road at noon.

“We started next to house and fought fire away from the house. We knew that most of the outbuildings, they were already fully involved and there was no way we could save them. But we were able save the house,” Gossard said.

Assisted by the Milton-Freewater Fire Department, Gossard said it took 30 minutes to contain the flames, which were fueled by plastics and caustic liquids that occasionally exploded.

The fire was out at 1:30 p.m.

The cause was a controlled burn that spread when a gust of wind hit, Gossard said.

It was unclear if the owners, Franklin and Therese Sannar, had insurance for the shed and its contents.

Two vehicles, including a 1999 Lexus RX 300, were destroyed in the fire.
