Whooping cough appears on upswing in Oregon

Whooping cough appears to be moving south from Washington state, according to Umatilla County health officials. As of Monday, there have been 619 reported pertussis cases in Oregon, compared with 208 cases during the same time frame in 2011. Twelve cases of pertussis have been identified in Umatilla County, said Genni Lehnert-Beers, administrator for the county’s public health department. “We know there are more pertussis cases here in the county but they are not being diagnosed due to stringent guidelines for case definition.”
