WALLA WALLA — The Blue Mountain Audubon Society’s pre-bird count survey tour will be held Saturday and the Christmas Bird Count will be on Dec. 15 this year.
The pre-bird count survey tour will be 12:30-4 p.m. on Saturday. Participants will meet in the Harper Joy Theatre parking lot at Whitman College for carpooling and directions.
Local conservationist and expert birder Mike Denny will lead a driving tour to identify and describe the areas of Walla Walla that will be surveyed during National Audubon Christmas Bird Count the next week.
This afternoon car tour will also help participants become acquainted with wintering birds and their habitats around Walla Walla and to learn about the excitement and importance of the annual bird count.
The official count begins at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 15 and will end at 6:30 p.m.. Participants will gather at 7:30 a.m. at the Harper Joy Theatre parking lot. Teams will be organized to carpool and survey a 15-mile-wide circle around Walla Walla.
Volunteers, whether expert birders or novices may participate in the count. Less-experienced birders will be paired in teams with those more experienced to make this not only a more valuable contribution to bird conservation, but a rich learning experience for all bird-watchers.
Participants should come to either activity prepared for a day in the outdoors, by dressing warmly. They should also bring binoculars and a packed lunch, if possible.
After the annual bird count, there will be a soup and dessert gathering sponsored by Blue Mountain Audubon Society where teams will compare sightings.
