WALLA WALLA — A Cameron Richman trey broke a 13-13 tie and gave DeSales a lead it would not relinquish at 16-13 with 4:03 to play in the first quarter here Tuesday in boys non-conference basketball action.

The Irish withstood every Riverside Christian run and emerged with an 81-74 win.

“It was a great team effort,” Irish coach Allyn Griffin said. “It (RCS) is a very good team. Coming out of the gates, this was a great start.”

Matthew Moore, a transfer from Walla Walla Valley Academy, closed out the first quarter with consecutive buckets and DeSales stretched its lead to 24-17 at the first break.

The Crusaders got a 3 from Kirk Gartrell to draw even at 26-26 with six minutes left in the half. The Irish answered with buckets from Moore, Luke Fazzari and Travis Haen to regain the lead at 32-26 with 4:35 left.

A Michael Garrett bucket, two of his team high 17 points, got RCS even at 36-36 with 15 seconds left, but Moore hit 1-of-2 free throws for a 37-36 Irish lead at intermission.

The Irish opened the second half on a 7-0 run and held the Crusaders scoreless while forcing eight turnovers until Gartrell hit a 3 with 3:30 left in the third. The Irish’s aggressive, full-court, man-to-man defense forced 27 Crusader turnovers on the night.

“There were a couple of stretches like that (7-0 run) where the scoring was difficult,” Griffin said. “We want to put pressure on them all day and all night. The word we like to use is ‘relentless’.”

The Crusaders clawed back to get within 46-44 with 1:51 left in the third, but Moore hit 6-of-8 free throws to send the Irish to the fourth up 52-46.

But Moore took a fall to earn his last trip to the free throw line and did not play in the fourth. Moore finished his three quarters with 19 points.

“He (Moore) is aggressive to the basket,” Griffin said. “He took some hard hits and the last one was to the head. We weren’t going to take any chances. He’s a catalyst and a leader on the court without a doubt.”

Without Moore, the Irish turned to Richman. Richman scored 15 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, and the Irish connected on 10-of-16 free-throw opportunities to outscore the Crusaders 29-28 over the last period.

A Garrett trey pulled RCS within 78-74 with 42 seconds left, but Haen got behind the Crusader defense for a breakaway to run the score to 80-74 with 40 seconds left and the Crusaders got no closer.

“What our guys did when we lost him (Moore) was very impressive,” Griffin said. “They gave us a lot of different looks and we responded very well.”

Haen finished with 14, Fazzari added 11, as the Irish put up 81 points on 30-of-53 shooting from the field.

The Irish (1-0) take on Mac-Hi Monday in non-conference action.
