DeSales' Cameron Richman draws the offensive foul as he tries to go up and over Mac-Hi's Saul Ortiz Monday night in Milton-Freewater.

The game started out well for Mac-Hi, which outscored the Irish 16-10 in the first quarter.

Saul Ortiz hit a jumper for the first hoop of the game and Carlos Angel made a bucket inside to put Mac-Hi up 4-0 with 6:40 remaining in the opening stanza.

The Irish fought back with a 3-point play the old fashioned way with a bucket, foul and free throw by Matthew Moore. Luke Fazzari then assisted on a shot from downtown by Moore to make the score 6-4 Irish, with 5:30 in the first.

Mac-Hi tied it at 6-all with a fast break layup by Dylan Shuler. A Travis Haen steal and pass ahead to Fazzari put the Irish up 8-6 with four minutes left in the first quarter.

A free throw by Angel, a fast-break layup by Moore, two more charity tosses by Angel and a drive to the hoop by Mac-Hi’s top scorer (Angel) and it was 11-10 Pioneers with 2:15 remaining.

A 5-0 Mac-Hi mini-run of Derek Richwine’s hoop inside, and trey by Shuler closed the quarter. It was 16-10 home team.

The Pioneers continued to score in double digits in each quarter, but couldn’t hold down DeSales much in the second and third quarters. DeSales scored 22 and 20 points in the second and third quarters, respectively, to build the lead as high as 20 points in the fourth quarter.

The Irish doubled up the home team in the second quarter, outscoring them 22-11 to take a five-point lead into the break.

The second-quarter charge saw Cameron Richman put in six of his 10 points as the Irish offense began clicking on all cylinders.

In the third quarter, Moore scored eight of the Irish 20 points, as DeSales outscored Mac-Hi 20-11 to grab a 14-point lead going in the final stanza.

Moore finished with a game-high 22 points and Angel dropped in 20 points for Mac-Hi.

The DeSales lead swelled to 20 points a couple of different times in the fourth quarter before Mac-Hi closed on an 8-0 run to finish the game.

“It was a good game,” DeSales coach Allyn Griffin said. “Both teams were running up and down the court a lot. It was good to be a part of.

“It was a very good test for us. That team (Mac-Hi) isn’t bad. They’ll grow and get even better. They’ve got better from when I scouted them last Thursday.”

Both teams struggled a little bit with turnovers. DeSales had 25 and Mac-Hi coughed up the ball 41 times.

“That many turnovers in one game,” Mac-Hi coach Travis Chester said, “and you can’t expect to come up on the winning end of the game. We’re seeing progress, though. This was huge progress over other games in many areas. I was happy with our effort, but we need to limit our turnover and work a little slower on offense.”

The Pioneers (1-4) next have a rematch with the Irish at DeSales Monday at 7:30 p.m.

DeSales (2-0) starts league play Thursday at home against Walla Walla Valley Academay at 7:30 p.m.
