PENDLETON — The Blue Devils entered the fourth quarter of their annual cross-border matchup with Pendleton Tuesday night with just a two-point lead.

Key free throws and 11 points from Wa-Hi’s Tanner Cranor helped the Blue Devils escape with a 57-51 victory over the Buckaroos and improve to 4-0 on the season heading into Mid-Columbia Conference play.

“Winning three on the road, these kids are pretty resilient and not a lot bothers them,” Wa-Hi coach John Golden said. “It was kind of a grinder tonight and they just kept with it, I was proud of them.”

Cranor, a 6-foot-8 post, finished with a massive 29 points and completed a double-double, pulling down 12 boards.

“We didn’t shoot it particularly well but we persevered,” Golden said. “Tanner really played well, we looked to him and he had a double-double. It was just, end-to-end, the best game he’s had.”

Wa-Hi made 11-of-17 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

The Blue Devils open MCC play Friday with Chiawana in Walla Walla. The game marks the first league doubleheader the boys will have played with the girls under the new schedule arrangement. The boys tip at 7:30 p.m.
