The Blue Mountain Audubon Society is seeking volunteers to participate in the annual Christmas Bird Count, this year to be held on Saturday.

The local effort has been sponsored by the Society since 1974 to identify species of native and migrating birds and tally their numbers, according to a release.

Similar efforts involving thousands of conservationists, scientists, teachers, landowners, students and citizens from throughout North, Central and South America take place during a two week period from mid-December to the end of December.

Volunteers for the Walla Walla Valley event will gather starts at 7:30 a.m. at Whitman College's Harper Joy Theatre parking lot. All are welcome regardless of bird identification skills. Contact MerryLynn Denny at 529-0080 for details

Participants should wear boots, dress in warm layers, and bring water, a hot drink, binoculars, hat, gloves, lunch, snacks and good humor.
