WALLA WALLA — Kennewick’s Anthony Jones went to the mat for the last match of the evening with the Lions and Wa-Hi even at 36-36 here Thursday in Mid-Columbia Conference wrestling action.
Jones, wrestling at 152 pounds, quickly got a take down and went on to a first-round pin as Kennewick pulled out a 42-36 victory.
“This was a match that got away from us,” Wa-Hi coach Dallas Jones said. “I definitely think we should have won. There were two or three matches that we were counting on getting wins at, and instead we gave up pins.”
Wa-Hi’s 160-pounder, Zach Anderson, got the Blue Devils off on the right foot. In the first bout of the match, Anderson worked to a 7-2 lead over the Lions’ Emanuel Garcia heading to the third round. Anderson scored a take down and then finished his bout by pinning Garcia 33 seconds into the round.
“He (Garcia) was pretty stocky and pretty strong,” Anderson said. “I went out there and saw what I needed to do. We (Wa-Hi’s 2012 regional qualifiers) have been practicing all year and we’re pretty tough and know what we are doing. We go out with intensity.”
Anderson’s pin staked the Blue Devils to a 6-0 lead.
“It (winning the first match) is pretty important,” Anderson added. “It sets the tone for the rest of the team. They see that I won, and they want to go out there and do the exact same thing.”
Wa-Hi won four of the first five matches by pin. Ben Thompson (182) won by pin in 2:20. At 195, it was Zane Henderson’s turn as he pinned Todd Pink in 4:17. Logan Reardon gave the Blue Devils a 24-6 lead with a pin at 220 in 4:59.
The tide turned as the Lions won three consecutive matches, one by forfeit at 106, to pull within 24-21.
Noe Gonzalez, at 120, jumped the Blue Devil lead to 30-21 with a 16-second pin.
With the aid of a forfeit at 132, the Lions won the next three to grab a 36-30 lead, but a forfeit to Groover Snell at 145 got Wa-Hi even at 36-36 and set the stage for Kennewick’s Jones to send the Lions home with the win.
“Some of our kids don’t believe they can win yet,” coach Jones said. “Some do and some don’t. That showed tonight. This was a heartbreaker.”
Wa-Hi drops to 0-2 in the MCC and travels to the Mac-Hi Christmas Tournament Saturday.
“We have the ability,” coach Jones added. “We’re headed in the right direction. We’re not quite there mentally. We’ll keep working and getting better and do the things we do to get where we need to be by the end of the season.”
“I feel we’re doing pretty good,” Anderson said. “We should’ve won a lot of key matches. We’re beginning again and have a lot of new freshmen. It’s only expected that we can only do so much (at this stage of the season).”
