WALLA WALLA — Led by 16 points from Jordan Shuette and a double-double from Alexander Wagner, Walla Walla Valley Academy won a crosstown battle with DeSales Thursday night, 68-64.

DeSales (2-1, 0-1) entered the fourth quarter of the game — both teams’ Southeast 2B League opener — with a 51-48 lead, but the Knights (5-0, 1-0) were able to pull away thanks to some key free throws down the stretch.

“They are a good team,” DeSales coach Allyn Griffin said of the Knights. “We always want to take care of our business at home, but you’ve got to give them (WWVA) credit, they played hard today and they didn’t make a lot of mistakes.”

Shuette hit 7-of-9 field goals and 2-of-5 free throw tries. With nine boards he was one grab short of a double-double.

“He was the one player they really couldn’t deal with,” WWVA coach Scott Wagner said. “So he was kind of a difference maker.”

Wagner made two field goals, hit three 3s and 2-of-2 free throws to score 15 points and pulled down 10 boards.

“Alex Wagner had a great night,” coach Wagner said.

Mat Hanson was the final Knight to cross into double digits with 12 points.

Travis Haen’s 14 points led the Irish, with Matt Moore, a transfer from WWVA, chipping in 12, Adam Eskil 11 and Darryl Galloway 10.

“Eskil made some 3s in the second half that kept us in it, along with Darryl Galloway,” Griffin said. “Adam just played really well offensively and defensively, I was really happy with him.”
