Wa-Hi beats Kennewick after buzzer

KENNEWICK — The cardiac kids were at it again here at the Lions Den in Mid-Columbia Conference boys basketball action.

Wa-Hi, after pulling out a 52-49 win Friday over Chiawana on a Gabe Porter last-second shot, found a way to down Kennewick with no time left on the clock.

The Blue Devils moved to 2-0 in MCC action with a 49-48 win after Spencer Locati sank a free throw with no time left.

As on Friday night, the Blue Devils built a 32-19 lead at the half but couldn’t maintain the advantage.

“We had a hard time holding the lead,” Wa-Hi coach John Golden said. “We missed a lot of lay-ins and free throws. We didn’t get shots on several possessions. We had fouls and travels. We had some adversity to deal with.”

The adversity caught up to the Blue Devils as the Lions used a 13-6 fourth-quarter run to even the score at 48 and the Lions took possession with 12-seconds left.

Kennewick missed a shot and Tanner Cranor grabbed the final of his game-high 14 rebounds and sent the outlet pass to Locati to give Wa-Hi a chance for a win in regulation.

“We dug in and got a stop when we needed it,” Golden said. “I’m proud of the way we handled it defensively at the end. Tanner got a big rebound.”

Locati, with time expiring, heaved one at the basket from midcourt. The desperation shot went wide, but an ill-advised foul put him at the line to shoot three with no time left.

Locati, in isolation at the charity stripe, missed the first two, but the junior guard nailed the last attempt and Wa-Hi had the 49-48 win.

“It was a screaming crowd with no time on the clock,” Golden said. “With the crowd screaming down on him, he knocked down the winner.”

Locati finished with eight points, but none bigger than the game winner.

Eric Klicker knocked down five 3s and led the Blue Devils with 17 points. Kennewick’s Mitch Mueller was the Lions offense as he pumped in a game-high 21 points.

Cranor added eight points to go with his 14 boards for the Blue Devils.

Wa-Hi remains perfect at 6-0 on the year.

The Blue Devils return to Kennewick Friday for an MCC match with Southridge.
