WALLA WALLA — Wa-Hi swam to two wins here at Harvey pool Saturday in non-conference boys swimming action.
The Blue Devils outswam Grandview 142-42 and outdistanced Prosser 112-42.
“We had very decisive wins,” Blue Devil coach Katharine Curles said. “Partially due to our overpowering numbers and partially due to the great races and exquisite spirit our guys had.”
Patrick Giedeman led the Blue Devil effort with a win in state-qualifying time in the 500-yard freestyle. Giedeman touched first in 5 minutes and 0.86 seconds.
“The postrace highlight was Patrick,” Curles added. “He achieved his state qualifying time. This is our first of hopefully many state cuts and it opens the door of possibilities for us this coming February.”
Giedeman and Josh Bumgarner went one-two in the 200 individual medley. Giedeman finished in 2:04.82 and Bumgarner touched second in 2:12.25.
“Patrick finished .3 seconds off his state cut and Josh was right around a personal best,” Curles said. “Both had good races.”
Tyler Jones took home first-place points for the Blue Devils in the 200 free with a 2:02.92 swim. Jayden Wallace won the 50 free in 24.55. Bumgarner added a first in the 100 breaststroke to go with his second in the 200 IM. Bumgarner won the 100 breast in 1:08.09.
Both the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay came home first for the Blue Devils. Giedeman, Bumgarner, Bryan Lopez-Vargas, and Wallace won the medley relay in 1:52.56. Wallace, Bumgarner, George Lopez-Vargas, and Giedeman swam a 3:49.52 to earn a Blue Devil first in the 400 free relay.
The Blue Devils take a holiday break and return to Mid-Columbia Conference action when Richland and Hanford visit on Thursday January 3.
