MILTON-FREEWATER — Mac-Hi’s wrestling team claimed the team title Saturday at the Mac-Hi Christmas Tournament.
Seven teams and about 200 wrestlers competed at the annual tournament.
The Pioneers finished first with 235.5 points to outdistance Clarkston, as the Bantams came home second with 208 points. Wa-Hi finished fourth with 148 points.
“Besides a match or two this was the best that we’ve wrestled so far this season,” Mac-Hi coach Beau Chester said. “I’m extremely excited for the kids.”
Mac-Hi had five first-place individual finishers and the Blue Devils took home four blue ribbons.
Cole Sckramstad (120 pounds), Chandler Fortune (132), Jeffrey Jones (138), Tavis Hodgen (145),and Brayden Moller (182), all went undefeated in the tournament to win their individual division titles.
The Blue Devils won four individual titles and had 15 wrestlers place in the top six of their divisions.
Jose Albarran, wrestling at 113 pounds, went 3-0 and decisioned David Coyle of Clarkston to take a title. At 126, Wil Babbitt took the title with a 5-4 decision over Zac Freeman of Clarkston. Nigel Lugo, at 152, wrestled to an 8-2 decision over Adrian Huartado of Parma, Ida.
Logan Reardon was the only Blue Devil to post a pin in the finals. Reardon pinned Heppner’s Tim Nelson in the second round to claim the 220 title.
“The kids wrestled with more confidence today,” Blue Devil coach Dallas Jones said. “We’re on the right track and moving forward.”
The Pioneers had two second-place finishers, including senior Jesus Saldana (170) with a 2-1 record and Alex Shaw (132) with a 2-1 record.
Mac-Hi’s Robert Burton (195), Vince Roff (160) and Miguel Rodriguez (152), Robert Burton (195), Vince Roff (160) and Miguel Rodriguez (152) all placed third. Freshman Gregory Moreno (285) took home fourth and junior Blake Yensen took fifth.
For the Blue Devils, Tanner Gorze took third at 120 and teammate Noe Gonzalez was fifth at 120. Groover Snell was sixth at 145. At 152, Kurtis Crump wrestled to fourth. Logan Hope (152) joined Lugo as a placer as he finished sixth. Zane Henderson was third at 182 and Benjamin Thompson came home fourth. Aaron Campos and Donovan Romero each placed in the 195 division. Campos wrestled to fourth and Romero earned sixth place. Luis Santana earned sixth for the Blue Devils at 220.
“I was pleased with how we wrestled,” Jones said. “We’re working hard and making progress step by step. It doesn’t happen overnight.”
Wa-Hi travels to Southridge Tuesday for a Mid-Columbia Conference match with the Suns.
