POMEROY — Delaney Monahan scored 12 points as Pomeroy held on for a 40-37 girls basketball victory over Dayton Thursday night.

Dayton led 16-15 after the first half but a 14-6 Pomeroy third proved decisive.

“Pomeroy’s tall and long across the back line of their zone,” Dayton coach Clayton Strong said. “We tried to get our girls to attack them, to get them off their feet and go around them, but they’re so long that they still blocked a lot of shots.”

Dayton’s Mikayla Bickelhaupt led all scorers with 13 points on 4-of-21 shooting from the field and a 3-for-5 mark from the free throw line.

On the night the Bulldogs hit just 14-for-62 (22 percent) of their shots from the field.

“We got impatient and started settling for jumpshots early in the shot clock,” Strong said.

Dayton (6-1) hosts LaCrosse-Washtucna Thursday.

“You never like to lose, especially to a rival,” Strong said, “but give them credit, I wouldn’t want to play them later in the year.

“Hopefully this is a wake-up call, but hopefully we don’t dwell on it and come out ready to play post-Christmas,” Strong said.
