WALLA WALLA — First-half scoring runs of 17-0 and 12-1 helped the Wa-Hi girls basketball team run away and hide from Mid-Columbia Conference rival Pasco during a 63-25 romp Saturday night in the Blue Devil gym.

The Blue Devils, 3-1 in league and 7-1 overall, placed a trio of players in double figures. Madi Doepker led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds — both game highs. Torri Crawford added 12 points and Maddy Sirmon tallied 11 points.

Wa-Hi’s first scoring bonanza snapped a 7-7 tie. It lasted from the 2:41 mark of the opening quarter to the 3:53 plateau of period two. Sirmon scored five points during the stretch while Kate and Mikayla Ferenz scored four points apiece.

“We came out a little flat,” Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah said. “That tends to happen after a Friday road game (in this case, at Southridge).”

The Blue Devils commenced their latter advance after a 3 by Pasco’s Jalayne Martinez with 3:37 left before halftime. Crawford had six of Wa-Hi’s 12 points.

“I challenged them between the first and second quarters to turn up the intensity,” Meliah said.

Wa-Hi enjoyed a 25-point cushion, 36-11, at halftime.

“I didn’t like our zone,” Meliah said. “We switched to man in the second quarter. It is easier to be more aggressive in the man defense.”

The change paid off handsomely. Pasco ended half one with 19 turnovers.

Doepker scored five points and Sirmon four in the third quarter as the Blue Devils increased their lead to 36, 52-16, heading into the final frame.

Wa-Hi led by as many as 41 points in the fourth quarter. A driving basket by Allie Greene gave the Blue Devils a 61-20 lead with 3:12 to play.

“The girls have played a lot of basketball games together,” Meliah said. “We did a good job of filling lanes, making the extra pass, and looking for the best shot available. We executed well down the stretch.”

The Blue Devils will oppose Clarkston in the opening round of the two-day, four-team Avista Holiday tournament which begins Friday at Lewiston’s Lewis Clark State College.
