PASCO — The Wa-Hi wrestling team took in a two-day Best of the West Invite tournament in differing formats over the weekend.
Dual meets were Friday for each of the 32 teams in the invite. Wa-Hi wrestled four teams in dual meet competition and finished 3-1.
The only team the Blue Devils lost to was Nampa, Idaho, by a score of 65-25.
Wa-Hi ran off a victory against West Salem, Ore., 45-25, and bested Battle Ground, Wash., 47-33. The Blue Devils also won over Inglemoore, Wash., 57-18.
Wa-Hi took part in the 32-man bracket per weight class individual tournament in Pasco on Saturday.
None of the Blue Devils placed. It was a single-elimination tournament, which meant that if you lost once in the first, second or third rounds then you didn’t place.
“Several of the kids were 2-1 in the individual efforts,” Wa-Hi coach Dallas Jones said. “It was a good learning experience for them. They were taught that you need to be up and ready for every match. If it had been a double elimination tournament, there is no doubt in my mind that several of the kids would have placed.
“It was what it was,” he said. “It was a really big individual tournament in one day and the kids are wrestling better. We’re not where we need to be right now. But I think we are heading in the right direction.”
The Blue Devils take to the mats Saturday at the Free Berry tournament in Pendleton.
