COLLEGE PLACE -- The College Place School Board has approved official names for its new middle and high schools.

The board voted 4-1 to approve the names of College Place High School -- CP-Hi for short -- and John Sager Middle School for the new schools. Board member Susan Moulton was against the College Place High School name, but in favor of keeping Sager Middle School. Board members Doug Case, Marci Knauft, Brian Maiden and Troy Fitzgerald were in favor.

The board also approved high school education specifications.

In April 2012, voters approved a $38 million bond proposal to rebuild Davis Elementary, and restructure Meadow Brook Intermediate and Sager Middle School into the district's new middle and high schools. The bond's passing will establish the city's first public high school.

The entire project will cost about $49.4 million, including state matching funds.

Superintendent Tim Payne made the name recommendations during Thursday night's meeting. Payne said community input showed the name College Place High School as the resounding winner. John Sager Middle School was also the favored name for the district's middle school, preserving its name from the past.

The board has yet to decide some of the school's more specific details, such as mascots or colors.

The new middle and high school are being built by remodeling the current Meadow Brook and Sager buildings, with some new construction between the two schools. Construction on the high school project is expected to start later next year.

Conceptual designs for the schools are now available on the district's website, www.cpps.org. Doug Case, the board's chairman, said the designs are preliminary and are still being reviewed. The public can review the documents, and email any feedback, online.
