WALLA WALLA — University Prep, Touchet, and Waitsburg-Prescott registered boys basketball victories Saturday during the final session of the annual D.A. Davidson Christmas Classic at DeSales High School.

The Pumas claimed their third consecutive Classic crown with a 55-52 victory over Valley Christian in the tournament finale.

The Indians dispatched Weston-McEwen, 64-43, and W-P posted a 55-52 win over DeSales.

In day-two action on Friday, University Prep bested Touchet, 49-32, Valley Christian outlasted DeSales, 73-68, and Weston-McEwen topped Waitsburg-Prescott, 66-45.

The Indians (4-6) used a 25-point fourth quarter to rout the TigerScots.

Colter McKeown led Touchet with 16 points and was 4-of-9 from 3-point territory. Ruben Butler added 13 points and Zach Carson scored 12.

“We knew they’d be trapping after made baskets,” Touchet coach Tim McKeown said. “We handled it pretty well. We’re decent when we’re patient and are moving the ball. The kids came ready to play and were up for (the game).”

Lance Thacker of Weston-McEwen (8-4) was the game’s leading scorer with 22 points.

Seth Deal capped an 18-point performance by draining a 3-point field goal with three seconds left in the fourth quarter to provide W-P (2-8) with its margin of victory.

Waitsburg-Prescott made 9-of-20 tries from downtown compared with DeSales’ 6-for-31 showing.

“This is the first game where we’ve been fluid with our jump shots,” W-P coach Tavis Crittenden said. “We were not in foul trouble and that was a big deal for us.”

Reilly Roach had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Irish (4-5).

“(Deal) hit an amazing shot,” DeSales coach Allyn Griffin said. “We didn’t take any bad shots. We made good choices, but the shots didn’t go down.”

The Pumas raced to a 17-4 lead after one quarter and went on to the 17-point victory.

Max Gregg paced University Prep with 14 points.

Touchet’s Vicente Flores narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

“I’m happy with my boys,” coach McKeown said. “They’ll scrap until the end. I need to commend my boys for that.

“You have to match them point for point,” McKeown said of the Pumas. “If you don’t, it’s going to be a long game.”

The Irish had no answer for VC forward Nick Cox, who scored 26 points to lead his team to victory.

DeSales closed a 13-point deficit, 59-46, after three quarters to low single digits late in the final period, but were unable to get over the hump.

“It was a great effort for three-and-half quarters,” Griffin said. “There was no quit. We never gave up. The guys still had something in the tank in the fourth quarter.”

Matthew Moore was DeSales’ top scorer with 22 points.

Weston-McEwen 66, Waitsburg-Prescott 45

Thacker had 16 points to highlight the TigerScots’ win over W-P.

“We had some foul trouble, but we had kids come off the bench (playing) good defense and (rebounding),” W-M coach Brian Pickard said. “All 11 guys helped us out.”

W-P’s Owen Lanning led all scorers with 17 points.
