Bulldogs beat up Pioneers

MILTON-FREEWATER - The Mac-Hi boys basketball team was beat up here Tuesday night against the Baker Bulldogs in Greater Oregon League action, 75-33.

Baker had six of its 14 steals in the first two and a half minutes to score on layups en route to a 17-0 run to start the game.

"I told my guys before the game that Baker likes to run it," Mac-Hi coach Curtis Carlson said. "And I told them that it was our turn to punch somebody in the mouth. Instead, Baker punched us right in the mouth, just like every other game we've played. Every team has come out in the first quarter or first half and punched us right in the mouth."

The Bulldogs pressed the entire first half and forced 11 Mac-Hi turnovers in a 26-6 run in the first quarter alone. Baker also didn't commit a turnover in that first quarter.

Mac-Hi had six turnovers in the second period.

"Baker came right out to a 17-0 lead," Carlson said. "Then I put that second unit in and they were able to handle the pressure a little bit more. They saw what Baker was doing from the bench and they set up into the press break offense to move the ball like we're supposed to. Because you can't beat the press dribbling the ball all the way up the court. You've got to move the ball up the court, pass it and find the open man. That is what they were able to do with that second unit. That was in the end of the first quarter and the start of the second quarter."

After the 17-0 run, Mac-Hi calmed down to be outscored 27-20 the rest of the first half.

Off the bench, Pioneers point guard Jesse Fields scored 11 of the 20 points put up by Mac-Hi in that stretch. The score at the intermission was 44-20 Baker, and it got worse.

Baker outscored Mac-Hi 31-13 in the second half for the win.

"I told the guys that nobody is 30-40 points better than us," Carlson said. "It is a confidence thing. We have to believe in ourselves. When you catch the ball, you have to have the confidence that you are going to be able to make a good move. Have the confidence that you're going to make a good pass or hit the open man or make the shot when you get a good look. It is really a lack of confidence. That is pretty much what it comes down to for us, confidence."

Fields finished with 13 points, the only Pioneer in double figures.

The Mac-Hi boys look to bounce back at Baker Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Pioneers are currently winless on the season at 0-17.
