CHEWELAH, Wash. - Bluewood Alpine Race Team (BART) racers experienced many of the extremes of Alpine Skiing at this year's Emerald Empire Youth Ski League (EEYSL) speed event at 49 Degrees North over the weekend.
Extreme cold and wind; warm temperatures and rain; challenging steep terrain and agonizingly flat sections; nearly perfect runs and dramatic recoveries; podium-topping performances; and one ride in the Ski Patrol rescue toboggan - BART skiers experienced it all. Good or bad, the racers will remember the 2012 version of this event, held each year at 49 Degrees North, reported BART program director Curtis Seiss.
Athletes participated in three days of skiing with speed training Friday, followed by two Super Giant Slalom events Saturday for the older classes and a Giant Slalom event Sunday for all ages.
Bluewood J-0 men's skiers swept the podium in Super G, while Colleen Gibbons won the first J-0 women's Super G and was on track to win the second before a dramatic fall that resulted in her being treated at a local hospital for possible broken ribs and a concussion.
Gibbons' fall prevented her from competing Sunday, but proved to foreshadow the outcome of the GS event for several BART racers, Seiss said.
Soft snow conditions led to a rough course and extreme ruts, especially on the steep pitch directly after the start, he said. In all, seven of the 11 BART athletes who started the event fell during at least one of the two runs.
Several - including Reid Reininger, who won all three events in the J-0 class - were able to recover and complete the race.
Four others either were unable to finish due to losing a ski in their fall or where disqualified for missing a gate during their struggles.
The Bluewood racers will be at home training this weekend before traveling to events Feb. 11-12.
