Knights' Wagenaar too much for Irish

Trevor Wagenaar scores 24 points in Sunnyside Christian's 58-34 victory over the DeSales boys Tuesday night.

WALLA WALLA - Sunnyside Christian's Trevor Wagenaar connected on 10 of 22 shots and sank three free throws for 24 points to help the Knights to a 58-34 victory over host DeSales Tuesday night.

The Knights, ranked No. 5 among 1B schools in the latest AP poll, limited the Irish to just 12 of 52 (23 percent) shooting on the night.

Travis Haen and Jeremiah Cox led the Irish with nine points each.

Nick Wales, a 6-foot-2 senior post, had just two buckets for four points, but of those two buckets, one provided the Irish's lone highlight for the night.

Down 34-21 with 4:10 left in the third, Wales snagged the ball away at the top of the Irish key and raced down the court. Where most would go for an easy layin, Wales elevated for a slam dunk - the first of his high school career.

"I'd been sitting on the bench and I saw that they (Sunnyside Christian) ran a play where they pass it over the top, back and forth, a few times," Wales said. "They had a big guy up top I was guarding and so I kind of baited him and finally he passed it and I stole it. Actually the fans were waiting for me to do that for a few games, and so I kind of figured it was time. I got the opportunity and I guess everything right and I threw it down."

Sunnyside Christian opened the game with a 6-0 run over the first three minutes, but the Irish answered with a 12-6 run to tie the match at 12-all going into the second.

Knights Drew Scheenstra and Wagenaar combined for 11 points through the second quarter and, along with a bucket from Drew Puterbaugh, built a 26-21 lead at the half.

Then the game got out of hand for the Irish, as Puterbaugh and Wagenaar put up eight points to start the half.

Wales' dunk gave the Irish some positive momentum as DeSales went on to score eight more points in the quarter, but it did nothing to slow the onslaught by Sunnyside.

The Knights limited DeSales to just one bucket, Wales' second on the night, and a free throw from Cox in the fourth while scoring 14 to build a lopsided final score.

The non-league loss drops DeSales to 4-11 overall. DeSales is 1-7 in Southeast 2B play..
