WALLA WALLA - David Michaels, a 6-foot-7 senior forward on the Whitman College men's basketball team, has been named to the national Team of the Week as chosen by the D3hoops.com website.
Michaels is one of five NCAA Division III players from around the country honored this week based on performances through games of last Saturday.
After matching his career high with 31 points Friday night at Lewis & Clark, he erupted for 40 points to carry Whitman past George Fox in what was a Saturday battle for a share of second place in the NWC standings.
For the night, Michaels was 14-of-17 from the floor (four of five from 3-point) and eight of nine from the free throw line. His only misses from the 3-point stripe and free throw line came during the final 90 seconds, when the game's outcome was already decided.
Michaels also picked off a career-high seven steals, handed out two assists and blocked a shot.
Against Lewis & Clark, Michaels hit nine of 13 shots from floor and went 13 of 15 from the free throw line in scoring his 31 points. He also had seven rebounds and two assists, along with one steal and one blocked shot.
