Prison unit remains on lockdown after fight

One unit at the Washington State Penitentiary will continue to be on restriction through the weekend, officials say.


WALLA WALLA - One unit at Washington State Penitentiary remained on lockdown today following a fight this week.

The assault occurred about 8 p.m. Tuesday night in the commons area of one of the four close-custody units in the prison's West Complex. According to ambulance reports, one inmate was taken to a local hospital for treatment of stab wounds, but prison officials have released no further information on his identity or condition.

Prison officials have said that a sharpened weapon was found after the fight and one inmate has been placed in segregation. Local police are investigating the assault.

Initially all four units, Delta, Echo, Fox and Golf, were placed on lockdown. According to an advisory posted on the prison's website today, Delta unit will remain on restricted movement over the weekend.

The remaining three units, Echo, Fox and Golf, are returning to normal operations. There have been no cancellations of visiting for this weekend.

Each close-custody unit has a maximum capacity of 198-200 prisoners.
