HELIX - Trailing 31-16 at halftime, Helix clamped down on Nixyaawii's 3-point shooters in the second half here Friday night in a girls Big Sky Conference Eastern Division basketball game.

Nevertheless, the Golden Eagles held on for a 44-36 victory that dropped the Grizzlies to 2-8 in league play and 3-18 overall. Helix traveled to Echo Saturday for another Big Sky East game.

"All four of their 3-pointers happened in the first half," Helix coach Melissa Nitz said. "We knew they were 3-point shooters because we had played them before, and we changed up our defense and adjusted a little bit in the second half. That made a big difference."

Taryn Ostrom sank three 3-point baskets and scored 17 points to lead Nixyaawii. Ronnie Sampson was also in double figures for the Golden Eagles with 15 points.

The Grizzlies' Kristin Williams, a 6-foot-2 freshman, scored 18 points to lead all scorers. McKayla Nitz and Sydney Cave followed with eight points each.

"Kristin can dribble the ball and score both inside and out for us," Nitz said of her freshman forward. "Most of the time our offense is set up where all of the girls get an opportunity to score, but we are thankful that Kristin's shots have been falling in the last few games."
