"We don't know what we're doing because we don't know what we're undoing," (G.K. Chesterton). "Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it," (Galadriel) from Tolkien's "The Fellowship of the Ring." Haunting quotations.
Christians have lost their sense of sin. Once a great force in America - the very soul of the nation - most of today's Christians don't remember their calling and have surrendered to the culture. Much has been undone. Much has been forgotten. The soul of our nation is dying.
When Jesus became man, He encountered a Roman culture rife with the immorality of divorce, abortion, infanticide, fornication, adultery, contraception, homosexuality and other sexual perversions. He revealed to His followers the most profound teaching the world has ever known: Christian chastity.
This teaching was inconceivable to the human intellect before Jesus revealed it, and incomprehensible after its revelation. Jesus knew the minds of His followers must first be enlightened to learn what is good, what is holy, what is to be chosen and loved.
Only then could each person use his will to desire and choose what his mind knew to be good. His early followers asked for and received the grace they needed to understand and live by the demands of Christian chastity.
As Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire, immorality vanished. Nonbelievers were drawn to the Christian lifestyle and the joy with which Christians lived within the boundaries of Christian chastity. Over the next 2,000 years, Western civilization was built and forged by the strength of Christianity's influence and its powerful teachings on chastity.
Too many Christians have forsaken their birthright and no longer know, much less live by, the demands of Christian chastity. It all started in 1930 with the Anglican Church's acceptance of contraception at its Lambeth Conference. All of Christianity had been united until then in condemning contraception as a grave sin.
Since then, too much of the Christian world has come to accept the very same immorality that poisoned the Roman Empire. Few Christians realize that "undoing" the Christian teaching on contraception has naturally led to the alarming explosion over the past several decades in the rates of abortion, infanticide, fornication, adultery, sterilization, self-abuse, homosexuality and other sexual perversions.
To all Christians: you are called to revive the soul of our nation. Pray for grace! Ask God for light to understand the beauty and power of Christian chastity as revealed by our Lord, and for strength to live within its teachings, thereby discovering the liberation, inner peace, and very real joy that such a life provides.
