Walla Walla man found dead near wreck

A Walla Walla man died Sunday near a mountain cabin he and his wife own near Bald Mountain Loop Road in Union County, Ore., officials said.

Phillip Ray Russell, 81, reportedly left his cabin at around 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon to ride a snowmobile to a shed on the property.

"When he didn't return, his wife and neighbors went to look for him," said Umatilla County Undersheriff Terry Rowan.

At roughly 5:50 p.m., Marilyn Russell and several neighbors discovered Russell lying near a wrecked snowmobile.

Rowan said the Umatilla County Sheriff's Department responded to a mutual aid call from Union County, which received the initial report.

"Our deputies were already in the area," Roman said.

Marilyn Russell and several others attempted CPR, and then transported Phillip Russell roughly seven miles to the intersection of Highway 204 and Jubilee Road, where they met with emergency crews.

The cause of death is unknown at this time, Rowan said, pending a medical examiners report.
