Ruth was born on Dec. 9, 1921, in Milton-Freewater to William A. and Elizabeth A. Pommerening. As a child she attended Tum-A-Lum School and graduated from McLoughlin High School in 1939. After graduating from high school she and her sisters had an apartment in Walla Walla, where she began working for the Book Nook Drug Store. During an outing with friends at the Armory in Pendleton, she met her future husband, Ray O. Hicks, who was serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. They were later married on Jan. 6, 1946, in his hometown of Hillsboro, Ill. After spending a few years in Illinois, Ruth and Ray moved back to Milton-Freewater in 1961 to raise their three children. A dedicated wife and mother, Ruth began working the split shifts at the Milton Drug Store and Highway Drug so she could spend time with her family when they were home from school. Later in life, besides making family her number one priority, she enjoyed gardening and tending to her many flowers, she could never plant enough and they were usually always pink, her favorite color. Ruth could often be found enjoying a glass of iced tea on her deck listening to the creek and looking at her yard. If you were a neighbor she would frequently ask you to stop and have a glass while visiting. She and her sisters are fondly remembered as active members of the Blue Mountain Community Church and its SAM group where they could be found sitting in the same pew every Sunday morning. She enjoyed spending time with all of her church friends. Ruth never forgot a person she met and always had a kind word to say.
Ruth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rod and Kay Hicks; her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Judy Hicks all of Walla Walla; her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and John Mauer of College Place; two grandsons, Wade Hicks and Derek Reser; three granddaughters, Sarah Hicks, Rachelle Barker and Jaime Mauer; two great-granddaughters, Audrey and Claire Barker; two sisters, Hilda Hagelstein and Jeanette Luz; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ray Hicks; three brothers, Ed, Alfred and William Pommerening; and three sisters, Helen Baker, Esther Caldwell and Martha Simmons. xx
