Letters To The Editor - Special education students not excluded

This is a clarification on the letter on Feb. 5 from Mr. Gwinn regarding Walla Walla High School not allowing a special education student to compete in track.

Wa-Hi does not have a policy that excludes special education students from being a part of a team.

However, WIAA rule 18.4.0 (Age Limits) does preclude students who are 20 years of age or older on March 1 from competition. The student in question turned age 20 in August 2011 and is ineligible by WIAA rule.

The Wa-Hi track and field program does a wonderful job in encouraging kids to participate and has the largest teams, both boys and girls, annually at our high school.
