Pair of chiefs selected for Walla Walla

Bob Yancey, interim chief, will head the city Fire Department and Scott Bieber has been named the top choice for police chief.

WALLA WALLA -- City Manager Nabiel Shawa announced his choices for the city's new fire and police chiefs at Wednesday's City Council meeting.

The fire chief position will go to Bob Yancey, who has served as interim fire chief since the retirement of Terry Thomas last year.

The police chief position will go to Scott Bieber, a commander with the Vancouver, Wash., Police Department, who will take over after Chief Chuck Fulton retires next month.

Bieber still has to pass a background check, psychological evaluation and lie detector test, all Civil Service Commission requirements.

Close to 70 applicants were received for each position.

The applicants were then narrowed down to three and the finalists were submitted to the city manager for a final decision.
