WALLA WALLA - Guard Jay Payne made 6-of-13 shots from 3-point land on his way to a 20-point performance that helped lift Walla Walla Community College to a 74-67 victory over No. 8 Yakima Valley in NWAACC Eastern Region men's basketball action Wednesday night in the Dietrich Dome.

The win improved the Warriors' league record to 7-2, good for sole possession of second place. WWCC is 16-6 overall.

"Beating Yakima is a good win," WWCC coach Jeff Reinland said. "Athletically, we don't match up with them."

In the early going, it was the visitors who were not matching up well. Walla Walla broke out to a 15-1, first-half lead and did not give up a basket for the first seven minutes of the game.

But YVC rallied to knot the score at 30-30 in the latter stages of half one.

The Warriors ended the period with an 11-6 spurt and led 41-36 at halftime.

Payne paced WWCC in the first half with 11 points and Mac Stannard added 10.

It was nip and tuck throughout much of the second half. The teams exchanged the lead twice and were tied four times after intermission.

Payne and Stannard accounted for nearly half of Walla Walla's offense in the second half, scoring 16 of the team's 33 points.

Stannard ended up with 17 points on the night.

YVC's DeShawn Battle matched Payne with 20 points. Amir Royal was next with 11 points and Johnnie Diggs scored 10 for Yakima Valley, which shot just 42 percent (23-of-55) from the field and 25 percent (3-of-12) from outside the arc.

"This is the second Wednesday in a row where we played a top team in the league and slowed them down," Reinland said. "They had trouble attacking our match-up zone. It makes us play at a pace where we will stay with them. We did a better job in the second half guarding penetration. Three 3s? That's pretty good.

"The kids were tough. They battled hard," Reinland said. "For the most part, we played pretty well."

The Warriors' next game is Saturday at Wenatchee Valley.
