COLLEGE PLACE - Walla Walla Valley Academy battled through a dry shooting night to take a 31-24 victory over Milo Adventist Academy Thursday night in the first round of the WWVA Friendship Tournament.

Emily Field led the Knights with 11 points in the victory, one that included a Milo foul-out and a technical on Milo coach Bill Lambie.

"It really wasn't very pretty," WWVA assistant coach Lloyd Redberg said. "In the first half, we were lucky to be only down by three. We got a little bit better in the third, and when (Milo's Larissa) Bovee fouled out (halfway through the fourth quarter) - she's a force inside - that really changed the complexion of the game."

Before fouling out Bovee, a 5-foot-10 post, scored seven points.

WWVA came back from a 16-13 halftime and held Milo to just two points in the third quarter and six in the fourth, while scoring 18 over the same stretch.

"(Ardenicia) Vaeono (a 5-11 post) got all her points in the second quarter and our defense really picked it up in the second half," Redberg said. "I think our defense is what really turned it around."

WWVA (2-10 Southeast 2B, 7-11 overall) plays Upper Columbia Academy today at 1:15 p.m.
