Weston-McEwen girls down Stanfield, 42-34

The TigerScots struggle from the free throw line but dominate the boards in the win.

ATHENA - The Weston-McEwen TigerScots outrebounded the Stanfield Tigers 38-to-18, en route to a 42-34 victory in Blue Mountain Conference girls basketball Friday night.

The TigerScots hit three 3-pointers but made just 13-of-27 free throws.

"Free throw is a funny term," W-M coach Amber Doremus said. "It is not really free. It is not a normal shot at all, nobody is guarding you and you can't move over the line. You can dribble the ball as much as you want. But we shoot a million free throws every day. So I hope we can get to the point where we make more free throws.

"It is still shooting," she said. "It is what is on your mind, where your feet are and how rushed you feel. There are a lot of factors that go into shooting. Some days are good and some days are not good."

Molly von Borstel led the TigerScots with 13 boards and nine points including 3-for-6 free throw shooting. Morgan Entze had 11 points and was 5-of-8 from the charity stripe. Marlene Bodmer had 13 points, including three 3s.

Makayla Christopher had nine rebounds.

In the first quarter, W-M jumped out to a 14-7 lead on six points from von Borstel and three from Entze, but Stanfield rallied with a 12-7 run over the second to go into the half down just 21-19.

"When things go bad, sometimes they go bad in spurts," Doremus said. "We try to encourage them to do a better job - tell them, ‘That was last time and next time it will go better.' You can't change something that has already happened. You can't focus on the past. You figure out how to do it better and then go do it better."

The victory improved the TigerScots' record to 13-9 overall and 8-5 in league.
