Iwo Jima veterans to gather Sunday at eatery

WALLA WALLA -- Five veterans of the Battle of Iwo Jima will meet Sunday to observe the 67th anniversary of the bloody conflict.

This is the 17th reunion of local Marine veterans who fought on the Japanese island. When the group first began meeting there were 12, according to organizer Owen Agenbroad of Dayton.

Expected Sunday are two veterans from Dayton, three from Walla Walla, one from Pendleton, and a member of the Naval Intelligence group from Walla Walla who was present in a submarine offshore during the operation.

Each participant is asked to bring a photo of himself in the early days of his service or another time if "boot camp" photos are nonexistent. Participants are also asked to share a brief history of their lives since discharge from the service. "Please keep this down to no more than five minutes," Agenbroad said.

The group will meet for lunch at Sterlings Restaurant, 1425 W. Pine St., at 2 p.m.

For more information call Agenbroad, 382-4540.
