James Kato, 82, passed away at Regency at The Park in College Place on Feb. 9, 2012. He was born on May 23, 1929, in Sacramento, Calif., to Yohei and Satsuki Kato. He was interned during World War II at Tule Lake, Calif., from May 1942 until August 1943. The family moved to Walla Walla, where James graduated from Walla Walla High School. He graduated from Central Washington University with a degree in music and teaching. He served in the army during the Korean War. Then, worked for Martin Archery as well as being a self-employed farmer. He was an avid bowler and a regular at Bowlaway Lanes. He loved to fish and watch sports.
James is survived by his brother, George (Mary); sister, Emmie Makishima; nieces, Kimi Makishima, Keiko Makishima (Gary Traganza), Sherri (Geoff) Inenaga, Karla Onchi and Lisa (David) DeLaurant; great-nephews, Brett and Shawn; and great-niece Leslie. He is also survived by an extended family of in-laws; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Lily Onchi.
