Spartans end Pirate boys' season in District 1B tourney

ENDICOTT - Craig Nelson scored a game-high 19 points here Tuesday night as Rosalia rolled over Pomeroy 62-44 in a loser-out boys basketball game at the Southeast 1B District Tournament.

The Spartans bumped their season record to 13-10 and advanced to another loser-out affair here Friday afternoon at 3 against Lacrosse-Washtucna. The Tigercats, 10-13, kept their season alive here Tuesday with a 62-51 victory over Garfield-Palouse.

Pomeroy concluded its season with a 9-14 record and Gar-Pal finished up 5-15.

St. John-Endicott and Colton square off here Friday night at 6 to decide the district championship and the No. 1 seed to the Class 1B state tournament. The loser of the championship game and the winner of Friday's Rosalia-Lacrosse-Washington battle will meet here Saturday at 6 p.m. to determine the district's second seed to state.

The Spartans bolted to an 18-12 first-quarter lead over Pomeroy Tuesday night and then outscored the Pirates 17-7 in the second period for a commanding 35-19 halfitme lead. The Pirates did nibble at Rosalia's lead in the third period and trailed 48-34, but the Spartans were able to pull away again in the fourth quarter.

Riley Bott led the Pirates on offense with 15 points and Matt FitzGerald and Mitch Ruchert each contributed 11 points. Zane Brown was Rosalia's only other double-figure scorer with 12 points.

Nelson and Grant Gelhaus pulled down 10 rebounds apiece for Rosalia and Damian Loucks chipped in with four steals. Ruchert led the Pirates with nine boards.
