WALLA WALLA -- Valley Transit board members tapped the brakes Thursday on a proposal to reinstate the free-fare program this summer.
Staff members have proposed offering free rides to passengers through the summer months as a way to boost ridership. The program proved a success in 2006 and 2007 when, after fares were reinstated, numerous passengers continued on.
The proposal, presented during a board meeting Thursday , could be a solution to falling passenger numbers in the wake of increased fares and a drop in bus passes bought by Walla Walla Public Schools.
However, board members have asked staff to prepare more information, including other options that could be explored, board member and City Council member Barbara Clark said today. She said a decision has been tabled until the next transit meeting, the third Thursday in March.
