PENDLETON - Weston-McEwen's girls advanced to the Oregon Class 2A state tournament with a pair of district elimination victories at the Pendleton Convention Center, 47-40 over Elgin on Friday and 43-42 over Union on Saturday.

The TigerScots, now 16-9 overall, likely play on the road against a foe to be determined today on Friday. A victory in that game would bring W-M back to the Pendleton Convention Center for the rest of the state tournament beginning Feb. 29.

On Friday, the TigerScots' victory over Elgin was as easy as the seven-point final margin indicates, W-M coach Amber Doremus said.

"We extended our lead in the fourth quarter," Doremus said, mentioning an 8-for-10 free-throw shooting performance by the TigerScots in the final eight minutes versus 1-for-4 for the Huskies.

"It was a back-and-forth game," she said. "We got down a couple times and had to fight back."

The TigerScots were led by Morgan Entze and Marlene Bodmer's 10 points apiece.

In Saturday's game, W-M found itself trailing several times against a Union squad the TigerScots beat easily early in the season, then by two in a tournament later in the season, and then W-M lost its last game to Union, 51-37.

"We knew it was going to be tight," Doremus said.

Union freshman Keesha Sarman, a Blue Mountain Conference first-teamer, hit 10-of-12 free throws for 18 points, lower than the 28 points Sarman put on the TigerScots earlier in the season, Doremus said.

"We tried to make life hard for her, she's pretty legit," she said.

Key to W-M's victory was Entze's inbounds pass to J'Shon Thompson with nine seconds left and the TigerScots trailing by one point. Thompson dribbled a few times, and then found Bodmer at halfcourt with four seconds left. Bodmer took the ball to the hoop for the score and the win.

Entze led the TigerScots in Saturday's game with 13 points, with Bodmer putting up nine.

"It was an exciting game," Doremus said. "They (the TigerScot players) are super-excited. It was one of those games where you either turn in your uniforms on Monday or you practice. We get to work on Monday."
