City may end glass recycling

WALLA WALLA - City officials are close to ending what some consider only a token glass recycling program at best, but not without a first hearing from citizens at the next Sustainability Committee meeting.

For the last four years, the city has collected glass from drop-off boxes, then stockpiled the glass at the Sudbury Road Landfill. That program is slated to end May 1.

Low market values and high transportation costs have prevented the city from shipping the collected glass to a bottle manufacturer in Portland, according to a city press release.

"Investment costs or logistical issues for implementing new programs are beyond the reach of public or private entities to implement at this time," the release stated.

The Sustainability Committee meeting will be March 6, 3:30-5 p.m. at City Hall, 15 N. Third. Ave.

Written comments can be made through the city's websites at ci.walla-walla.wa.us until March 20.
