LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - Support for schools appreciated

On behalf of the students, staff and board of directors of the Walla Walla Public Schools, I am privileged to extend our gratitude to the community for its support in our recent replacement levy.

We are humbled and gratified by the level of support extended to us. At this point, our "yes" vote total is 64.33 percent and I know it will climb as the election is validated.

I would also like to acknowledge the Citizens for Walla Walla Schools, led by Shauna Bogley and Peter Swant, for its work in raising the level of awareness of the need to support our schools. The committee's work, along with hundreds of volunteers, really made a difference.

Lastly, I would like to commend our staff. Working with kids is wonderful work, but challenging. Increasing accountability and rising academic standards, combined with a difficult economy and ever changing societal issues, make public education very difficult.

But, I am proud to say, our students are better prepared than ever before. If you doubt me, please volunteer to be part of a panel for senior presentations at Wa-Hi. You will leave proud of your community's students and confident in the future.

Again, I very much appreciate your support.
