Scottish essayist and historian Thomas Carlyle noted, "All that Mankind has done, thought, gained or been: it is lying as in magic preservation in the pages of Books. They are the chosen possession of men."
Walla Walla easily proved this statement this past weekend at the 37th annual AAUW Book Sale at the Marcus Whitman Hotel and Conference Center. The community eagerly supported the event through thousands of contributions to our book boxes throughout the year and purchases at the sale. Children faced the delightful dilemma of choosing their free book while adults tried to balance their many purchases in arms, boxes and bags. Yet each book was a treasure, a "chosen possession," to its new owner.
On behalf of the Walla Walla branch of the American Association of University Women, I would like to acknowledge Walla Walla and our out-of-town guests for their tremendous support and the overwhelming success of our book sale.
The money generated will enable AAUW to continue to provide scholarships for women and fund other community projects that support our mission: "To advance education and equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research."
We appreciate your continued support by placing donated books in our drop boxes around town and attending next year's sale, Feb. 22-24, 2013.
AAUW President Karen Peddicord
