WAITSBURG - Ronnie Hulce scored 16 points to lead the Waitsburg-Prescott girls to a 38-32 victory over Weston-McEwen in cross-state basketball Tuesday night.

The TigerScots struggled in the first half, only putting up seven points and taking a 17-7 deficit into the half. In the second half, W-M outscored Waitsburg-Prescott 25-21, but it wasn't enough to overcome the TigerScots' early stagnation.

"We didn't have a good shooting night," W-M coach Amber Doremus said. "We did have it within two with a couple of minutes to go, but we just didn't finish it. We had a much better second half than the first half."

"I think both teams struggled a little bit offensively, but I think it had to do with the defensive part of the ball game," W-P coach Jerry Baker said. "(Both teams played) man to man, they were very aggressive, got in the passing lanes and caused us a lot of problems."

After climbing within two points of W-P, the TigerScots unintentionally fouled Taylor Doepker twice and she knocked her free throws down to help lift W-P past the TigerScots. Doepker finished 5-of-8 from the free throw stripe with seven points.

"She made 4-of-6 (free throws) in the fourth quarter and so she stepped up and made some big baskets there," Baker said. "It went down to the wire, it could have gone either way. We hit our baskets then and made our free throws."

Morgan Entze led the TigerScots with 9 points on the night.

Weston-McEwen falls to 7-4 on the season and is 2-0 in the Blue Mountain Conference.

It hosts Irrigon Friday at 6 p.m.

Waitsburg-Prescott is now 9-1 (2-0 in the Southeast 2B).

W-P travels to Asotin Friday at 6 p.m.

"It was our first day back to school for both schools," Baker said. " (It was) good to get back into the swing of things here."
