TOUCHET - Slow and steady did not win the basketball game for the Liberty Christian boys Tuesday night.
The Patriots took advantage of Touchet turnovers and miscues to take a 39-32 lead into the fourth quarter, scoring 13 points in each of the first three quarters, but the Indians put on a furious 21-point rally to come back for a 53-51 victory in Southeast 1B-2B interleague play in Touchet.
Point guard Eric Hines scored 11 points on the night, nine of which came in the fourth quarter - including the game-winning field goal.
Tied a 51-all and with 13 seconds remaining, Elias Martinez picked off an in-bound lob from L-C and brought the ball up the court. He found Hines in the corner and Hines nailed the jumper.
Coltor McKeown nabbed the inbound pass to seal the victory.
"Liberty Christian was matched up to us pretty well and it was a scrappy game," Touchet coach Tim McKeown said. "There were a lot of turnovers in the first half (17), take some of those away and its a different game. We tried to force the ball a lot and played undisciplined. We got some into into foul trouble and had to sit some kids and it was probably the best thing for them."
The Indians got into foul trouble early, with Hines racking up three personal fouls in the first half.
"He's (Hines) pretty much our emotional leader, the game predicts on how he is," McKeown said. "A lot of times he comes down the court and forces a pass, and kids can't handle it because he's so amped up.
"I sat him in the second quarter (due to foul trouble) and talked to him about it," McKeown said. "At halftime I just said, ‘We've got to keep you in there and you're going to have to live with what you get.' Simple. In the second half, they were a little bit more patient, they were working the ball, they were staying within what we want to do."
Will Huesby, a 6-foot-3 post, led the Indians with 13 points and 10 rebounds to score a double-double in his first game back from vacation.
Martinez also cracked double digits with 10 points.
Hines had the only Touchet 3-pointer for the night. Liberty Christian, on the other hand, hit 7 treys in the loss and was led by Jake Siefken with three.
Touchet moved a game closer to .500 at 4-5 overall (0-4 in league).
The Indians travel to Garfield-Palouse Friday at 7 p.m. and host Pomeroy Satuday at 6 p.m.
