MILTON-FREEWATER - The Mac-Hi boys basketball team committed 27 turnovers and connected on just nine field goals in a 69-22 loss to the Riverside Pirates here Tuesday evening.

"Riverside is definitely the best team that we've played so far," Mac-Hi coach Curtis Carlson said. "That is what happened tonight - the better team won. Not a whole lot we could do against a team like that."

The Pirates had 29 field goals, nabbed 18 steals and recorded six blocked shots.

"Riverside does a good job pressing, extending that zone and using the big guys to their advantage to get into the passing lanes to get a lot of easy steals," Carlson said.

"At the same time, when they extend that much, that leaves a lot of gaps and we just weren't aggressive enough. There were some shining spots where we got the ball to the high post and made a quick pass or when we attacked the rim, but it just wasn't enough."

The Pioneers' leader in points and rebounds was Derek Richwine with six boards and seven points. Off the bench, post Tyler Williams added five points and five rebounds. Ricky Sandoval had four points and Jeremy Ley three.

The leader in points for Riverside was Erik Ruiz with 15 points, while Jovanny Llamas and Marco Carranza scored 10 apiece.

The Pirates dealt the Pioneers a devastating blow in the first quarter when they outscored Mac-Hi 19-2. The Pioneers had seven turnovers in that run.

Ruiz and Carranza had six points apiece early, and Omar Murillo had three of his game-high seven steals in that stretch.

The only Pioneer bucket in that first period was inside by Richwine.

Mac-Hi recovered in the second quarter to nearly match Riverside's scoring as the Pirates had a 17-13 edge. Both Richwine and Williams had four points apiece during this time span.

The second half, however, looked much like the first quarter. The Pioneers were outscored 33-7 in the second half.

The Pioneers did outrebound the Pirates, 23-15.

Mac-Hi looks for its first Greater Oregon League game Friday night at home against La Grande at 7:30 p.m. The Pioneers completed the preseason slate without a victory.
